Understanding The Working Of A Search Engine

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Understanding the working of a search engine is not indeed that complex. Having said that, a search technology in itself is very sophisticated and yes, a lot complicated to understand for the ones with limited technical knowledge. However, this should not stop us from gaining a basic overview on a search engine’s working.

The working of a search engine can be compared to that of a huge library with books on diverse subjects. Both of them have one thing in common i.e. they both deal in information. A huge resource of information is a prerequisite for both of them to work. To build on this resource, a well stocked library collects and stores books on various subjects from the publishers; a search engine, in a similar way, crawls and indexes WebPages from as much of the World Wide Web as it can. In case of a search engine, information retrieval is through search query and hence when a visitor types in “human anatomy” into the search box, the search engine returns those results that have the word ‘human anatomy’ or related references to it. The number of occurrences of such words in a web page is often referred to as keyword density.

Now once this vast information is collected, the question that comes to our mind is how to ensure that the information delivered is of highest quality. One way of validating quality in a library is to bank on the publishers’ credentials, author’s past works and also the popularity of a book which can be measured by the number of times it has written about in various other sources and media. However, the quality and relevancy of the media is important. Reference of a well known book in a news channel like BBC provides more authenticity than a reference in some channel that people hardly know of. In the context of a search engine, the quality of a web page can be measured by the domain it belongs to and the information it deals with.

The popularity of a library or a search engine is based on the quantity and quality of information resources it deals with and the ease of its accessibility. A search engine is an integration of a well equipped library with world class automated data management and information retrieval technologies, powerful enough to give us what we are looking for within seconds. No wonder the buzz around search engine optimization is reaching phenomenal levels each day!

The basic of SEO

In the very beginning what we need to know is WHAT IS SEO? In simple words we can say that SEO is the process to bring targeted traffic to a website. And this is not as easy as it sounds!! Usually whenever somebody builds a website so he thinks to earn from that website, no body is there out of us who builds a website for a local PC. So here, simply if I say that when we want most of the people to know about our website so we need to do Search engine optimization. And if we make a few strategies to achieve the first ranking on major search engines then we definitely not only introduce our website to others but also it brings a lot of traffic, actually the region I’m living in most of the people aren’t aware of seo, if I tell somebody that I’m doing seo so they usually think that I’m talking about any SCO (shop-cum-office). But with the help of internet I always keep in touch with the veteran seo’s all over the world, and recently I heard that the trend has changed, there’s no more traditional seo. I know that this is time when web 2.0 with multimedia marketing are making boom and even the trend of web 1.0 marketing has gone. But even then if I don’t want to spend a lot of money on sponsored links and on placing ads on other websites so there I would have to go for directory submission (most of the people have started calling it a traditional way of seo) though it takes a lot of time but can place us on the top positioning, but this is not enough to get targeted traffic, for targeted traffic we are required to get a lot of other stuff done like, blog submission and article writing, these things can bring lots of targeted people and boost our page rank as well. And we should find relevant websites to request for reciprocal links and the most important thing here to observe is that the website we are going to request for reciprocal link should have good amount of incoming links and less of outgoing. These days Google is looking for one more thing if some website places our link on the relevant page so it much! Much! Better than a link on irrelevant pages. Now the websites like myspace.com, hugpages, orkut.com and other social linking websites are being a good way to make your website famous. We usually do blogging but now its time to do something creative, do some video blogging and check out the results.

I recently heard about the MLMgoldmine and msm , these are really good, just open youtube and type MSMgoldmine in the search bar and you will really see amazing video’s for the effective way of seo. Now I think people should change the older ideas And adopt web 2.0 technologies which is basically well known as the social technology to bring people together and share ideas, and through this way some innovative people are providing you the way to be popular
